Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased tracks, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection is “The Modern Age” by Exitmusic from the 2011 EP From Silence on Secretly Canadian.

Exitmusic – The Modern Age (MP3)

The husband-wife duo Exitmusic hails from New York, where they’ve slowly built up buzz since their 2008 release The Decline of the West. Part post-punk, part-trip-hop, the pair have honed their songwriting skills to the point where reverb, noise, and ethereal vocals all come to a head. Minimal beats, bass, and synths cover the rest of their sonic texture, a dark and brooding tumble through apocalyptic upheaval. They’ve been likened to a fusion of Radiohead and Portishead, with elements of Sigur Rós and Godspeed You! Black Emperor thrown in for good measure. Either way you cut it, what Exitmusic is doing is certainly worthy of attention. “The Modern Age” is a perfect slice on which to judge the duo, with all their trademark sounds melted in.

Exitmusic will be LIVE on KEXP from The Cutting Room Studios in NYC tomorrow, Tuesday Portugal Soccer Jersey, October 18 handbags outlet, at 9AM PST, as we get ready for KEXP’s broadcast from the Ace Hotel during CMJ 2011. Right now, though, you can check out their Bandcamp page and peep their video for “The Hours” here:
