Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Midday Show host Cheryl Waters, is Sci-Fi Kid
by Blitzen Trapper from the 2007 album Wild Mountain Nation available on LidKerCow Ltd.
Just when you thought Portland’s music scene couldn’t get any better Blitzen Trapper comes along with their highly eclectic helping of alt-country, mashing it up with prog-rock and even some grungy electro. This sextet, as on their previous efforts, went the cheaper self-release route, this time around receiving considerable help from the blogosphere and an amazing tour manager. 2007 tours with the Hold Steady and David Vandervelde already behind them, Blitzen Trapper will soon set out with San Francisco’s Two Gallants. With the strength of their album, their tour mates, and the buzz around their live performances, it’s no wonder BT has been bringing houses down for months. Another big boost occurred in July when the band signed to Sub Pop, a deal that will result in the album’s international release 10/22. Additionally, Sci-Fi Kid
has been getting the remix treatment lately, including this recent one by Recordist aka The Faint’s Clark Baechle, MP3 hosting courtesy of Pampelmoose. This is the point where you head over to the band’s MySpace page and become an uber-nerdy fan, but don’t forget to listen to their live KEXP performance from 6/23 or see this recent performance at NYC’s Mercury Lounge:
