Face Time - Dr. Cheryl Karcher

T.T.: What products do you like for those purposes?

T.T.: In your opinion, what makes a woman most beautiful?

C.K.: I don’t believe in doing anything too extreme. You can end up slowing your metabolism down. Your body goes into a diabetic state or you develop ketosis. None of this is as good for your skin as being balanced with your diet — and trying to keep your weight stable.

T.T.: What skin care products do you use?

T.T.: So many anti-aging creams are too expensive for many people. Do you think a less expensive cream means that it’s less effective?

T.T.: Is there a face you find aesthetically pleasing to your professional eye?

C.K.: Definitely! An illuminating concealer is the only thing that really helps with discoloration and shadows. Blush and lip color help add a rosy glow to the complexion. Skin becomes more transparent with age and there is less blood circulation, so products that add healthy luminosity are useful.

T.T.: Are there any types of facials you would recommend?

C.K.: This new cream has an ingredient that stimulates and turns on a youth gene. It stimulates the DNA and increases a protein which amps up the cells metabolism. Your skin will act more youthful, therefore look more youthful.

C.K.: Drinking and smoking while sunbathing.

Dr. Cheryl Karcher is a super-knowledgeable, insightful and informative dermatologist who happens to look much younger than her 53 years. She doesn’t wear makeup very often; as long as she has her tube of Aquaphor, she’s happy. She obviously knows a thing or two. There’s a dermatologist in the house — let’s get the skin care scoop!

C.K.: In the 20s and 30s, it’s all about protecting your skin with sunblock and using products with antioxidants. The 40s and 50s are the years where you want to work on correcting and repairing any damage — Retinols, microdermabrasion and certain acids can be helpful to cell turnover and rebuilding. In the 60s, skin loses plumpness and volume Coach Outlet Online store, so this is a good time for fillers, if not before.

C.K.: As a woman ages, it is important to do exercises to strengthen muscles and bones. Taking calcium, magnesium and getting enough vitamin D is crucial. Also, the B vitamins — especially folic acid. The omega fatty acids are important too. I take a supplement called ‘Simply One Women,” which is excellent. It has everything. Eat lots of berries, especially blackberries because they have more fiber. Drinking green tea and eating raw almonds and salmon can never hurt.

C.K.: Only if she popped the capsule in the dark. Any light that hit it once it was opened would kill the potency of the vitamin.

T.T.: What are your thoughts on low-carbohydrate diets and juice fasts?

C.K.: I always have Aquaphor Healing Ointment with me; it comes in small tubes for the purse. It’s great for anything that needs moisture or healing. For an illuminating concealer, I like YSL’s Touche Eclat. A good tinted moisturizer that brightens the skin — Boscia’s BB Cream — is great as it has SPF 27. Clinique makes a great moisturizing lip stain called Chubby Sticks. Avon’s Mark Just Pinched Instant Blush Tint is great for a touch of natural cheek color.

T.T.: Take me through the aging process from the 20s and up: what happens and what should you do?

T.T.: Do you see a downside to your profession?

T.T.: You don’t use makeup yourself, but do you agree that it can help achieve a flawless complexion?

C.K.: Not at all — you don’t have to spend $300 to get results. A great deal of research goes into Avon products to make them affordable but effective. Avon is a little under the radar. But they have built a great reputation. They’ve been in business for 125 years.

C.K.: As cells get older, they shrivel, lose their energy. They stop producing collagen and elastin, and cells break down. That is why skin starts to sag and lose its plumpness. Anew works on the skin cells, taking them from being a prune to a plum!

T.T.: My mom would pop a vitamin E capsule every night and apply to her skin. Would that have the potency of a cream?

T.T.: So it helps reverse the aging process? What happens to the skin as it ages?

CK: Yes, anyone who misuses it and doctors who don’t say no. Procedures should be used to restore and maintain what is there naturally. When there is a disconnect between what a person thinks they look like and what they actually look like, that is bad. For example, lips that are plumped beyond what is natural for that person’s face, and a chipmunk look, are unattractive. Many women compare themselves to other women and don’t stop to embrace their own unique beauty.

T.T.: Since you are the consulting dermatologist to Avon products, can you tell me about the breakthrough facial cream Anew Genics?

C.K.: A face can be visually perfect, but if there is no light shining from the inside Coach Outlet Online store, it just won’t be as beautiful. In other words, women who have a bright aura will outshine the most aesthetically perfect face hands down.

C.K.: I would have to say Demi Moore. She got it right — she still looks like herself, gorgeous.

C.K.: I think its important to keep the pores really clean. A deep cleansing facial is a good idea every month. A facial with a lot of massage to stimulate the muscles and the lymph nodes really helps tone the face. I also believe in the filler Sculptra, which helps give back to your face the volume which is lost over time.

T.T.: What can a woman do to help their skin from the inside out?

Tina Turnbow

C.K.: I like Tata Harper’s Regenerating Cleanser or Neutrogena Makeup Remover Towelettes Night Calming. It’s important to exfoliate with fruit acids, lactic, salicylic or glycolic acids, so I use Anew Clinical Advanced Retexturizing Peel Pads with glycolic acid. There are two face creams I use in addition to the Anew Genics — Neocutis Bio Cream Restorative Skin Cream with PSP and SkinCeuticals Rehabilitative Cream for Aging Skin. Products with growth factors are key. For a quick fix Coach Outlet Online store, firming serums or masks are good.

T.T.: What is the worst thing you can do for your skin?
